Additionally, a corroboree ground, known as “the pineapple paddock,” was situated in Baynes Street. In the Turrbal or Jagara language, the Highgate Hill area was referred to as Beenung-urrung, which translates to “frilled lizard.”
The banks of the Brisbane River were characterized by a lush tropical landscape, adorned with towering fig trees, majestic hoop pines, cascading vines, vibrant flowering creepers, captivating staghorns and elkhorns, towering scrub palms, magnificent ferns, and a multitude of other fern species. The area was also home to exquisite and rare orchids, as well as wild passion flowers.
