During the 1880s, European settlers began establishing their presence in the region. Horse-drawn trams commenced their operations in 1885, providing transportation services to the area. In 1890, a portion of land close to Teneriffe House was subdivided and put up for auction, resulting in the sale of 30 parcels under the name Teneriffe Estate. Electric trams operated along Commercial Road from 1897 until December 1962. Historical photographs of the suburb depict trams displaying the destination “Bulimba,” which has caused some confusion in later times. Originally, this area was considered part of the suburb called Bulimba, which spanned both sides of the Brisbane River.[9] Postal deliveries often encountered misdirection, leading to the renaming of the western section of Bulimba, which is now known as Teneriffe, prior to World War I. However, the unofficial usage of Bulimba as an address on the northern side of the river persisted for several decades, appearing on maps and electoral rolls until the 1940s (although its Woolstore No.3 – Teneriffe Apartments at 241 Arthur Street witnessed a gradual decline in usage).

As Queensland’s wool exports surged in the early 20th century, Teneriffe’s economic significance to the state grew as well. The first wool store was constructed in 1909, followed by the opening of three more stores by 1915. An additional nine wool stores were subsequently built, with the last two completed during the 1950s. These grand structures were meticulously designed by renowned architects, symbolizing the commercial success achieved by Australian wool producers in the early 20th century. In 1927, the Australian Estates store was inaugurated by the Duke and Duchess of York. Boasting the largest showroom in Australia, it had the capacity to store 24,000 bales of wool.
